Federal Work Study Student Employment Program
The Federal Work-Study Program is a federally funded, campus-based aid program designed to provide part-time jobs for eligible students with financial need. Students are paid at least minimum wage, but some positions pay more. Students work around their class schedules.
To participate in the Federal Work Study Program students must:
- Submit the FAFSA no later than December 1 each year. Limited funding available; apply early for priority consideration.
- Students must have demonstrated financial need per the FAFSA
- Students must be meeting Standards of Satisfactory Academic Progress
- Students must be enrolled at least half time (6 credit hours) each semester they are employed
- Students may not work more than 29 hours per week
- Students may not work during regularly scheduled class times or activities
- Student earnings may not exceed the amount of Federal Work-Study that appears on their most recent financial aid award
The Office of Student Financial Aid & Student Employment will send an award notification to eligible students.
We make every reasonable effort to help awarded students find a Federal Work Study position; however, students are not guaranteed employment.
Earnings received from the Federal Work Study Program are considered taxable income; however, they are excluded from consideration as income on the FAFSA for the following year.
Students receive a paycheck biweekly for hours worked. Since this money is earned through employment, any fees owed The University of Akron are not deducted from wages earned.
