UA Wayne Earns Military Friendly Designation

12/03/2014

The University of Akron Wayne College is proud to announce it has been recognized with a Military Friendly Schools designation by Victory Media, publisher of G.I. Jobs magazine. The recognition puts UA Wayne in the top 15 percent of all colleges, universities, and trade schools that are doing the most to ensure veteran success both inside the classroom and post-graduation.

“The transition from military to civilian life can be an adjustment,” said Barb Caillet, manager of student services and veterans certifying official at UA Wayne. “We provide the support services our military need to succeed as they prepare for new careers.” In many cases, a veteran’s military and service background can translate into academic credit.

That was the case for Nathan Winkler, mechanical engineering major and member of the Air National Guard. Growing up in Creston he said he has wanted to serve in the military since he was very young. Based in Mansfield, he gained experience working on C-130H aircraft. He plans to pursue aeronautical engineering and design and test airplanes. When asked why he chose Wayne College as the next step in his career, he said that many of his friends and his sister all started at Wayne and recommended that he do the same. “Classes are small, which gives me the opportunity to talk one-on-one with my teachers,” he said. “I also appreciate all of the personal attention I’ve received from Barb. She helps me stay on track with my paperwork and is always there to help when I need it.”
