The University of Akron Wayne College announces three new scholarships to offer students this fall. The three new scholarships include, The Serpentini Chevrolet Buick of Orrville Scholarship, The Eddie and Jane Steiner Endowed Scholarship and the First-Knox National Bank Scholarship.
Established by Bob Serpentini in 2019, The Serpentini Chevrolet Buick of Orrville Scholarship is designed to help as many as five students per year. Eligible students must be graduates of Orrville or Smithville high schools, enrolled full-time at Wayne College and demonstrate financial need. The Orrville area has always held a special place in Serpentini’s heart. He has financially supported numerous ventures, as well as local non-profit organizations. Throughout Serpentini’s career, he forged ahead to improve his dealerships to become both and industry leader and a leader in giving back to the communities, in which he does business. By establishing this scholarship, Serpentini continues to help strengthen the community.
The Eddie and Jane Steiner Endowed Scholarship was established in 2019 by Eddie and Jane Steiner, as a desire to give back to Wayne College and to help current and future students. Eddie Steiner, president and chief executive officer of The Commercial & Savings Bank (CSB) received a bachelor’s degree in accounting from The University of Akron, while taking most of his classes at Wayne College. Steiner was also recognized by the College with the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2017. “Wayne College made it possible for me to pursue higher education while my wife and I were raising a family, maintaining employment and staying involved in the community; and we’re very grateful for that opportunity,” stated Steiner.
Eligible students must demonstrate financial need and be enrolled in at least six credit hours per semester at Wayne College or the UA Millersburg campus. First consideration will be given to non-traditional students, as well as current employees of CSB and their dependent and non-dependent children.
The First-Knox National Bank Scholarship was established at the end of 2018 under the leadership of Bob Boss, president of First-Knox National Bank. Boss stated, “it’s the Bank’s desire to help students in Holmes County access higher educational opportunities close to home.” Eligible students must demonstrate financial need, be graduates of either West Holmes or Hiland high schools and be enrolled in at least six credit hours per semester at UA Millersburg or Wayne College. The annual gift from First-Knox National Bank will be distributed between two recipients, one from each of the two high schools in Holmes County. If an eligible graduate is not identified, the scholarship will be awarded to a non-traditional student. As a generous benefactor in the community, the First-Knox National Bank scholarship is part of their commitment to aid local college students and to support the mission of The University of Akron Wayne College and UA Millersburg.
“It’s wonderful to see our community business leaders provide incredible opportunities for Wayne College students,” stated Dr. Jarrod Tudor, dean of Wayne College. “In many cases these critical scholarship dollars make the difference regarding the decision to attend college.”
