Free Self Defense Workshop for Women

04/01/2016

It may not be something we want to think about, but the time may come when we need to defend ourselves. Knowing even the most basic self-defense concepts can help defuse a situation and allow escape to safety.

Females are particularly vulnerable, but according to Lt. Chad Cunningham, The University of Akron police department, there are basic techniques that can be used regardless of size or strength. He is teaching a women's self-defense workshop on Wed., April 13, 6:30-8:30 pm at Wayne College in Boyer Gymnasium. Free and open to the public, the class is suggested for those 14 and over. Registration not required.

"I teach avoidance first, but if they need to defend themselves, there are tactics and techniques that are extremely effective that anyone can use," Cunningham said. "It can feel awkward participating in a class like this. Therefore, I try to keep things lighthearted so that everyone enjoys the experience and feels better equipped to handle a threatening situation in the future."

Wayne College is located at 1901 Smucker Rd., Orrville. For more information, email communityrelations@uakron.edu.
