Science lab renovation and new campus gateway taking shape

Construction has begun on two long-anticipated projects at The University of Akron Wayne College in Orrville. The first, a new gateway to campus, is located at Crown Hill and Back Massillon Roads. The gateway project began in early April and is scheduled for completion by fall 2013. The project will provide a second entry to the College, new digital signs at both College entrances and a handicap-accessible entrance at the lower level of the Student Life Building. Additionally, the ring road will be enhanced with a lit walking and bicycle path available for use by students and community members alike.

The second project, also slated for fall completion, involves renovation of two science labs which are original to the College’s Main Campus Building, which was constructed in 1972. The labs, which currently serve over 700 students per year, will be updated with modern equipment to better meet the needs of the College’s anatomy, physiology, chemistry and biology students. The $1.6 million project is being funded in part by the State of Ohio, with a contribution of $800,000 to the project.

As construction continues over the summer months, the College will still offer science lab classes thanks to the Orrville City School System, which is granting the College use of the new Orrville High School science labs. According to Wayne College Interim Dean Neil Sapienza the school system’s generosity is an example of the community spirit that exists in Wayne County.

“The collaboration and sense of community in Wayne County is wonderful,” he said. “Wayne College is truly honored that our students will be the first to use the new lab equipment at the high school, and we are extremely thankful for the assistance offered by Orrville City Schools.”

UA Wayne College is a regional campus of The University of Akron offering bachelor’s degrees in social work and business-related fields as well as the first two years of general bachelor’s degree courses for students who plan to complete their degrees at the Akron campus or other colleges and universities. Associate degree programs, continuing education and certificate courses are available as well.
