A Patriot Among Us: 9/11 First Responder Pam Sprosty Tells Her Story

08/19/2014

Sept. 11 is Patriot Day, a national day of service and remembrance of the events that occurred on 9/11/01. In observance of Patriot Day, The University of Akron Wayne College presents Pam Sprosty, a Wooster native and 9/11 first responder, on Tuesday, Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the Main Classroom Building. The event is free and open to the public.

Sprosty was an emergency medical services volunteer with the South Orangetown Ambulance Corps out of Rockland County, just north of Manhattan. She and her partner were first responders dispatched to the World Trade Center following the terrorist attacks. They were sent to rescue survivors, but instead found themselves recovering what was left of victims. The 1970 Wooster High School graduate stayed at Ground Zero for three weeks and was recognized for her service and bravery with the New York Congressional Medal of Honor. She is also a graduate of the College of Wooster in New York, has a degree in veterinary technology from LaGuardia Community College, and graduated pre-med from Columbia University.

In 2013, Sprosty spoke to students in Tom Weckesser’s First Aid and CPR class. “Pam is a positive influence on anyone who cares for people,” he said. “Selfless, courageous and humble, she is truly a patriot among us.” She will share her inspirational story and answer audience questions.
