Welcome to Wayne Day: Student Panel Shares Their Best College Advice
Insights and Tips to Help Students Start Their College Journey
The beginning of the fall semester brings a flurry of excitement and anticipation, and this year’s Welcome to Wayne Day was no exception. During an information session on Thursday, August 21, new students gathered to hear firsthand experiences, lessons learned and advice from a panel of Wayne College students. Their candid stories and practical tips offered valuable guidance to those just beginning their college adventure.
Each panelist brought a unique perspective, shaped by their own backgrounds and college journeys. Here’s what they had to say:
Liam: Embrace Conversation and Collaboration
Liam encouraged new students to seek out conversations with as many people as possible when tackling assignments or grappling with challenging subjects. “Whether it’s on a discussion board, with a parent, or chatting with a friend, talk things over,” he advised. Engaging in dialogue not only exposes you to new ideas and approaches, but also helps you process information aloud and strengthen your understanding as you walk through the material.
Grace: Remember to Pause and Recharge
Grace’s advice was simple but powerful: “Take a break!” College life, she noted, can be stressful. When you start feeling overwhelmed, give yourself permission to step away—whether for a breath of fresh air, a walk around campus, or simply a few minutes to reset. She emphasized that breaking assignments or study sessions into smaller, more manageable chunks can make daunting tasks feel much more approachable.
Sydnie: Make the Most of Campus Resources
Sydnie pointed out the wealth of support systems available at Wayne College. “Use your resources!” she urged. The Library, Smucker Learning Center and Student Services all have dedicated staff who not only understand the coursework but also know the professors and required materials. By tapping into these campus resources, students can lighten their academic load and find expert help tailored to their needs.
Jada: Balance, Discipline and Self-Care
As an international student, Jada brought a fresh perspective to the panel. She reflected on the challenges of adjusting to a new environment, stressing the importance of reaching out for help, maintaining balance and practicing self-care. “Stay disciplined,” she advised. “Set aside specific times for studying and keep your phone out of reach to avoid distractions.” Jada warned that coursework can pile up quickly if breaks become too frequent, so staying organized and focused is key to keeping up.
Enjoy the Experience
One message rang clear from every panelist - enjoy your college experience! Make time to explore campus events, get to know classmates, and immerse yourself in the supportive environment and community spirit at Wayne College. College is not just about assignments and grades: it’s about growth, connection and discovery.
