From Small Town Roots to Worldwide Adventures: MBA Graduate Charts New Horizons

Hailey Copeland didn’t travel far from her Orrville, Ohio roots for her college education. She completed most of the prerequisite courses in high school through the College Credit Plus program before enrolling in undergraduate classes. She earned her bachelor’s degree in biology in 2024 from The University of Akron and will graduate this December with an MBA from UA.
She credits a pivotal meeting with UA’s education abroad advisor for influencing her college choice, in addition to the university’s affordability. She also received various merit, honors, UA club/organizational, education abroad and community scholarships that helped minimize her student debt. Yet her story is defined by more than local achievement—it’s her global perspective and passion for travel that set her apart. With visits to 25 countries, a study abroad in Germany, and part-time work in Long Beach, California, Hailey brings new meaning to the phrase “going places.”
One of the most significant surprises of college life for Hailey was the positive effect of Wayne College’s small class sizes. She found that the intimate learning environment allowed her to interact more closely with her professors, better understand course content, and feel more comfortable and motivated in her studies. Contrary to her initial expectations, the smaller classes suited her learning style far better than large lecture halls.
Hailey fully embraced campus life by participating in various student organizations and leadership roles. She was an active member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority, the Williams Honors College and the Diamond Graduate Women’s Leadership Xperience. Her leadership extended to serving as a Zip Ambassador at Wayne College, an International Ambassador for the Education Abroad Program in Konstanz, Germany and as a student assistant at the UA NEXT Conference.
Hailey treasures her memories of being a student at Wayne College, from the scenic fall leaves and nature trails to the free gym and workout facilities. She is especially grateful to professors and tutors who provided extra support, resources and letters of recommendation for scholarships and job applications. Highlights of her time at Wayne as a student employee include winning the Wayne College winter door decorating contest with the Smucker Learning Center, visiting the therapy dogs in the Library and enjoying the camaraderie in the SLC office.
One of the best pieces of advice Hailey says she received is “college is what you make it.” She encourages students attend campus events, join clubs, connect with peers and step out of their comfort zones. She notes that Wayne students can participate in main campus organizations, which helped her stay connected during hybrid and online learning. These opportunities expanded her personal and professional network and introduced her to lifelong friends.
Reflecting on her time at UA, Hailey credits her academic, work and social experiences with equipping her for future success. “I feel very optimistic about my future after graduation. Not only has UA given me the academic knowledge from all the courses that I have taken, but it allowed me to network with individuals who can help me succeed in the future,” she says.
Hailey will continue to follow her passion for travel and embrace new and exciting adventures when she moves to London, UK after graduation. She plans to pursue a career in biomedical business administration. “I’m really excited to move abroad again and live and work in such a historic and lively city.”
