Veterans invited to Wayne College for free luncheon

Ernest StadvecThe University of Akron Wayne College invites area veterans to their sixth annual Veterans Day Luncheon and Recognition Ceremony on Thursday, Nov. 7 at 11:00 a.m. in the Student Life Building. Located at 1901 Smucker Rd. in Orrville, the event is free for veterans and a family member, but seating is limited. Registration is required at wayne.uakron.edu/webforms/rsvp/veterans.dot or by calling 330-684-8973.

The University of Akron alumnus, Ernest Stadvec will provide the keynote address. The military-style ceremony will include lunch, music and a time to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. Representatives will be on hand to share local resources available to veterans, including educational benefits available to those who have served. Social time will be from 11-11:30 a.m., with Stair Steps to Wellness providing complimentary chair massages to veterans who arrive early. A ceremony and lunch will start promptly at 11:30 a.m.

Stadvec earned a B.A. in Political Science from The University in 1950 on the G.I. Bill, after serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II. A participant in UA’s ROTC program and commissioned when graduated, Stadvec went on to serve as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, and later served in the Air Force Reserve. Stadvec spent eighteen years active and Reserve status with the Army Air Corps and Air Force leaving with the rank of First Lieutenant.

During his years at UA, Stadvec played both baseball and football. In 2012, he was inducted into The University of Akron’s Varsity “A” Sports Hall of Fame, as the recipient of the Mike Krino Varsity “A” Achievement Award.
