Wayne College professor appreciates U.S. freedoms, establishes scholarship for UA law students
People who have never experienced discrimination often fail to appreciate U.S. legislation – enacted and refined over the years – that guarantees all citizens equal opportunity and equal protection under the law.
Dr. Jerry Obiekwe, however, has never taken those rights for granted during the many decades he has made his home in the United States.
A math professor who has taught since 1993 at The University of Akron Wayne College, Obiekwe left his native Nigeria to pursue greater educational opportunities. Along the way, he earned two doctoral degrees from U.S. institutions and gained something equally important: a special appreciation for the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act, and all laws that profoundly improved the rights of women and minorities in America.
UA Wayne College Earns ‘Military Friendly’ Designation
The University of Akron Wayne College’s efforts on behalf of returning military veterans seeking college educations have been honored by G.I. Jobs magazine for 2014. The ‘Military Friendly School’ designation, which places UA Wayne College in the top 20 percent of all colleges, universities and trade schools nationwide, shows a commitment to providing a supportive environment for military students.
“We have over 60 veterans on our campus under the G.I. Bill this year and we’re committed to helping them succeed,” said Melissa Triplett, student services counselor and veterans certifying official for UA Wayne College.

Finances are one of the highest hurdles students face today in obtaining a college degree. That’s why the daughter and son-in-law of a legendary local family known for making tasty fruit spreads, peanut butter, baking goods and other sweet treats for more than a century has donated $500,000 in endowed student scholarships to The University of Akron’s Wayne College in Orrville.
The University of Akron’s master’s degree in the principalship is now available at Wayne College via real-time distance learning technology! This degree prepares graduates for employment in public, private, correctional, community and alternative schools as site-based principals and assistant principals.
• 30-credit hour degree with an additional 12 post-master’s hours for licensure.
