Welcome to the Office of
Counseling & Accessibility

The staff of the Office of Counseling & Accessibility would like to welcome you to our office and to The University of Akron Wayne College.

Our goal is to provide reasonable accommodations, counseling resources and supports, and well-resourced environment to students in order to promote student success. We strive to provide students with disabilities equal access to learning opportunities and services that level the academic playing field but does not provide unfair advantage at UA Wayne College. Our office is in the Smucker Learning Center, Room B-107.

This mission goes well beyond the legal requirements, including Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, and supports the University's commitment to create an accessible and welcoming environment for all students.

Accessibility Services provides services for students with:

    • Cognitive disabilities, such as learning disabilities or brain injuries
    • Physical disabilities, such as vision/hearing impairments or mobility issues
    • Psychological disabilities, such as ADHD, anxiety, or mood disorders
    • Temporary disabilities, such as short-term injuries or medical issues
    • Accommodations will not be approved until documentation from a qualified professional is presented to the Disability Specialist.

Reasonable accommodations may include but are not limited to:

Counseling Services

Students generally take on many roles and may encounter a great deal of stress (i.e. academic, financial, social, family, and work) while attending school. It is not uncommon for students to encounter situations that are challenging and confusing and find that their usual way of dealing with problems may not be working. The focus of counseling at Wayne College is to help students with the normal, short-term issues. Students that have issues that are long-term in nature, chronic or those requiring specialized treatment will be assisted in locating a mental health provider in the community.  Fees for all off-campus services will be the financial responsibility of the student.

Counseling is a free service to currently enrolled students of UA Wayne College. Please schedule an appointment with Julie Hartzler by calling 330-684-8923 or email julie21@uakron.edu.
