01/27/2015

Chinese acrobats. African dance. International fashion. All of these attractions and more will be featured at this year’s International Festival Feb. 4-5 at The University of Akron Wayne College. The College is located at 1901 Smucker Road , Orrville.  The festival and all entertainment is free and open to the public.

The two-day event opens with an education day featuring speakers, dance performances, music, and an Embracing Our Differences art exhibit. The following day includes cultural exhibits, hands-on activities, an ancestry.com workshop, a fashion show featuring items on loan from the College of Wooster, and food samples. Visitors will receive a passport to take along as they travel between exhibits and activities, acquiring stamps and redeeming them for a free t-shirt.

Festivities end with a spectacular performance Feb. 5 at 7 p.m. as Chinese acrobats use contortions, foot juggling, plate spinning, and Chinese yo-yo to amaze and entertain. The act includes an interpreter who shares facts about Chinese culture and customs to make it a unique learning experience for the whole family. Come at 5 p.m. and hear a presentation on Chinese culture by Dr. Paul Weinstein, history professor, Wayne College. Afterward, enjoy the festival and attend the performance.
