UA Wayne College Dean’s Notes

10/31/2013

Well it is hard to believe but November is here already. On my drive into work this week I admired the beautiful trees- ranging from red and yellow to a nice, bright orange. It’s somehow comforting to know that no matter the trials and tribulations we go through that life goes on.

The semester is well underway, and as I walk the halls I see everyone smiling and working hard. Students are working together and conversing with faculty, I see the hustle and bustle in the Learning Center, and everyone in admissions already getting ready for a new semester.

On September 25 Wayne College had the ribbon cutting for the renovated science labs. Mr. Tim Smucker and members of Mrs. Norma Amstutz, one of the Wayne College’s founders, family joined us in celebrating the event. Everybody was impressed with the new labs and our own Dr. Vierheller was the highlight of the tour as he enthralled the visitors with different physics experiments. During the ribbon cutting breakfast I had the pleasure of announcing that Dr. H. Reid and Susan Wagstaff committed a $500,000 gift supporting scholarships—in perpetuity—for Wayne College students. In honor of their commitment to Wayne College’s students and their success, Wayne College is officially naming its new main thoroughfare Wagstaff Way.

The Wagstaffs made this scholarship contribution as a way to honor Susan’s parents, Paul and Lorraine Smucker, as well as extend the family’s historic connection to Wayne College and The University of Akron, which also includes the Paul H. Smucker Memorial Scholarship, the Paul and Lorraine Smucker Learning Center, and the J.M. Smucker Company Multipurpose Room.

Wayne College was just honored as a Military Friendly School for 2014 by the G.I. Jobs magazine. This places Wayne College in the top 20 percent of all colleges, universities, and trade schools nationwide that are committed to providing a supportive environment for military students. There was a very nice article in the September 28 Daily Record recognizing this achievement with several veterans stating how much they appreciate Melissa Triplett’s efforts. Way to go Melissa.

Also on September 28 I spent some time at Woosterfest. Regina and the Roo Crew did a fantastic job at the Wayne College booth helping young kids create their own candy concoctions and spin art. The weather was beautiful and everyone had a good time.

With everything going on here at the College I invite all of you to stop out for a visit. Come and see us, I look forward to seeing you.
