Dr. John Roncone honored by OAHPERD

To John Roncone, physical fitness isn't just about skills on a court or strength on a field. To the UA Wayne College sport science and wellness educator, it’s a lifestyle that enhances personal well-being in every way- physically, emotionally and socially.

For his significant contributions to the field of health education, Roncone has been named the recipient of the Health Professional of the Year Award for the State of Ohio for 2012.

Roncone, who also serves as the program coordinator for the Exercise Science program at the College, says he is honored to be the recipient of this year’s award.

“I am completely humbled by such recognition. I consider it to be a privilege to do what I do, and to be recognized for it makes me very happy and excited.”

Roncone, who was nominated by his colleagues within his discipline, will receive the award on Dec. 6 at the Ohio Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (OAHPERD) Awards Reception in Columbus.

Roncone said he believes teaching is about engaging with students while creating a fun atmosphere where learning occurs.

“I am a firm believer that learning is fun and can be a powerful tool,” he said. “If you engage with students and involve them, more than likely, they will learn.”

Roncone earned his B.A. in Sports Administration from Mount Union College, 1994, his M.S. in Health Science from Slippery Rock University, 1995, and his Ph.D. in Health Education and Promotion from Kent State University in 2005. He has taught at The University of Akron Wayne College since 2002 (part-time) and began his full-time duties as assistant professor in 2009.

Interim Dean of The University of Akron Wayne College, Neil Sapienza, said Roncone is to be congratulated on the prestigious award.

“John’s credentials and history of promoting physical fitness are impressive,” he said. “He is to be commended for advancing the health education program at the College, serving as an excellent health role model to our campus community, and promoting comprehensive school health education.”

Wayne College is a regional campus of The University of Akron and offers the first two years of general bachelor’s degree courses for students who intend to complete their studies at the Akron campus or another college or university along with a number of associate degree programs.
