11th Annual Writers Workshop at UA Wayne College
One of the greatest challenges writers face, according to Dr. Jack Kristofco, Professor Emeritus of English at Wayne College and founder of the Writers Workshop, is learning to accept constructive feedback on their writing and to continue with the hard work of revision and rewriting that is critical to their growth and development as artists. Kristofco says writers can find the expert advice and one-on-one input they need at the upcoming Wayne College Writers Workshop.
Local writer P.L. Gaus, author of the Amish-Country Mystery series and recipient of the event’s 2012 Writer of the Year award, agrees with Kristofco, saying, “The Wayne College Writer's Workshop is one of the area's very best places for new and established writers to study the art and the profession of writing, in all of its varieties and aspects.”
The annual workshop is being held at The University of Akron Wayne College on Saturday, April 5 from 8:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. This year's workshop allows writers and aspiring writers to meet published authors and participate in sessions about poetry writing, true crime tales, building and maintaining suspense, adding depth and vitality to novels through setting, and writing and photographing for magazines.
Participants will enjoy a light breakfast followed by two 75-minute workshop sessions, a panel discussion with the presenting authors, lunch, a featured speaker and an awards presentation for regional and student writers, including the annual Writer of the Year award.
The featured speaker this year is Mindee Arnett, author of the sci-fi thriller Avalon (Harper Collins) and The Nightmare Affair (McMillan), the first in her The Arkwell Academy series. The sequel, The Nightmare Dilemma, will be published this March. She writes young adult fantasy, science fiction and horror. Her presentation will offer advice to writers- both aspiring and published- on how to break through, continually improve, and stay sane in the challenging world of writing.
Other workshop presenters include award winning Ohio outdoors writer/photographer, Chip Gross; author and “recovering attorney” Clair McMillan; award winning poet and John Carroll University professor Philip Metres; and critically acclaimed true crime author James Renner. Participants may sign up for two workshop sessions.
