Free College For High School Students Through New State Program

02/19/2015

The University of Akron Wayne College and the Wayne College Holmes Campus are hosting College Credit Plus Information Nights for students entering grades 7-12 and their parents, to learn how to earn college and high school credits at the same time. The Holmes Campus event is Feb. 24 at 6 p.m. The Wayne College event is March 9 at 6 p.m.

Ohio’s new College Credit Plus program replaces the Post Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) Program and goes into effect fall 2015. The purpose of the program is to provide college-ready students in grades 7-12 with the opportunity to reduce their higher education costs by earning college credit in high school. Classes, including books, are offered free of charge for qualifying students.

At CCP Information Night take a campus tour, learn about admission requirements, and meet current and former students like Morgan Silvey, a high school student majoring in chemical engineering. Silvey works in the chemistry lab as a student assistant, but she can often be found in the UAWC3 3D Printing Lab collaborating with other engineering students and teaching workshops to children in the Orrville Area Boys & Girls Club. “Wayne College is equipping me with the skills and knowledge I need to move into my dream career,” she says. “Taking classes through the College Credit Plus program saves me money and makes college more affordable after I graduate from high school.”
