Human Trafficking Survivor Speaking at Wayne College

04/10/2013

April is National Child Abuse Prevention month and National Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention month. In recognition of these important social issues The University of Akron Wayne College invites the community to hear Theresa Flores, human trafficking survivor, speak on Tuesday, April 23 at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of the Main Building. The event is free and open to the public. Groups welcome.

“When people hear the term human trafficking they believe it’s something that only happens in foreign countries,” Flores says, “but they couldn’t be more wrong.” Flores shares her own powerful true story, one where she lived in an upscale suburb of Detroit as an all-American 15-year old high school student when she unknowingly became enslaved into the dangerous world of human trafficking.

As a dedicated activist, counselor, and licensed social worker she shares how to identify red flags and offers advice about prevention and education. She is the author of The Slave Across the Street and the founder of Save Our Adolescents from Prostitution (S.O.A.P.). She is also the director of education and training for Gracehaven House in Dublin, Ohio. To learn more about the issue of domestic human trafficking visit TraffickFree.com.

RSVPs are appreciated, but not necessary, to communityconnections@uakron.edu or call 330-684-8729.
