Jada’s story begins in Maraval, Trinidad and Tobago, where she grew up surrounded by vibrant nature and a close-knit swim club community. Her love for water sports and the outdoors shaped much of her early life, and because of that, “I’ve always loved spending summers in the water, whether it’s swimming, going to the beach or trying different water activities," Jada shared. Her appreciation for the outdoors naturally extends to hiking, biking and capturing the beauty around her through photography.
Jada’s decision to attend Wayne College was guided by a desire to remain close to relatives living in Wayne County and to benefit from smaller class sizes. For Jada, the campus’s welcoming atmosphere has been especially meaningful. "As an international student, it means a lot to feel comfortable asking for help whenever I need it."
Jada’s choice of major was a natural fit for her interests and aspirations. She enjoys that her degree program takes her outside the classroom to directly engage with the world around her. “The geology program allows me to combine my curiosity about the Earth with my passion for the outdoors, while also giving me the chance to learn skills that can be used to solve real environmental challenges in the future,” she said.
Unexpectedly, working as a student employee at Wayne has been a highlight of Jada’s college experience. "Working as a student employee has allowed me to take part in many events that make my college experience more enjoyable," she says. The role has helped her build lasting friendships and connections, contributing to a sense of belonging and personal growth.
Beyond academics, her involvement on campus and in student employment has helped her grow in confidence, communication and teamwork. "UA is preparing me for the future by giving me both the academic knowledge and real-world experiences I need to succeed," she said.
Jada credits her experience at UA for preparing her for life after graduation. Through the geology program, she is gaining a strong foundation in earth science and resource management, while developing problem-solving and analytical skills that will be valuable in any career.
Looking ahead, Jada is motivated by the prospect of a career dedicated to understanding and protecting natural resources. She hopes that her studies in geology will empower her to contribute to a more sustainable future, both globally and at home.
After completing her studies, Jada plans to return to Trinidad with the goal of pursuing a career in the energy sector. "My goal is to contribute to building a future where energy is used more sustainably, helping to protect the environment while supporting growth and progress in my community," she shared.
Jada’s journey as a geology major is possible through Wayne College’s Degree Tracks, which offer students the first two years’ worth of credits at Wayne College before seamlessly transitioning to Akron’s main campus to complete their major.
