UA Wayne College Announces 2013 Distinguished Alumni Recipient

The University of Akron Wayne College Alumni Association is proud to recognize Dr. Larry Markley as its 2013 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient.Dr. Larry Markley

Markley is the owner of All Creatures Veterinary Clinic and Lodge, a Rittman based veterinary facility he established with his wife Sally in 1990.

Markley, a member of the first class to walk through the doors of The University of Akron Wayne College in 1972, attended the College until 1975 and went on to receive both a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and a Master’s Degree of Veterinary Preventative Medicine from The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1980.

While attending UA Wayne College, Markley served as president of the student senate and editor of the school’s first newspaper, The Wayne Warrior. He also participated in drama productions and worked with his mentor, Professor Scott Hagan, outfitting the new science labs and landscaping the campus.

Markley said his time at UA Wayne College was definitely a positive factor in his life. “It was very rewarding and enriching,” he said. “Wayne College very much influenced me and helped me get where I am.”

After graduation from The Ohio State University, Markley and his wife lived in Maria Stein, Ohio, and then in Chickasaw before returning to the Orrville area to raise their family in 1989. In 1990 they established All Creatures Veterinary Clinic in Rittman and in 2000 built a new facility on Sheets Road in Rittman. All Creatures Pet Lodge was added to the business in 2006.

Markley remains involved at UA Wayne College where four of his five children attended as postsecondary high school students. In addition to developing a veterinary aide course for the College’s Office of Continuing Education and Workforce Development, he also recently presented a lecture at the College titled “Pets and Their People: Emerging Trends in Pet Disease and Their Human Parallels.”

UA Wayne College Interim Dean Neil Sapienza says Markley is an excellent choice for the Distinguished Alumni Award.

“Larry is an excellent role model for our students. He embodies the important concepts of service learning and community involvement.”

Markley lives in Orrville with his wife Sally and is very active in the community. He serves on the Wayne County Community Foundation Board of Trustees and is an active member and three-time past president of the Rittman Rotary Club where he has been recognized as a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow. Markley is also past president of the Rittman Kiwanis Club. He promotes community activism and growth as a member of the Rittman Chamber of Commerce, Rittman Lions Club and served as co-chair, alongside his wife, of the Rittman United Way. In addition, Dr. Markley and his wife are active supporters of Hospice & Palliative Care of Greater Wayne County, Central American Medical Outreach, Rittman Recreation Center, Orrville Area Boys and Girls Club and the Wayne County Humane Society, as well as numerous other youth activities and animal rescue and placement groups.
